Purdham earns World Cup call-up

Rugby League Harlequins forward Rob Purdham has been named in England's 24-man squad for the World Cup in Australia.

"It's a lifetime dream for me to represent my country, especially in a World Cup," he told Radio 5 Live.

Wingers Mark Calderwood and Lee Smith, plus Bradford duo Jamie Langley and Paul Sykes are included.

England are in a group of four teams, along with hosts and holders Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.

Jed Lowrie Gets Game-Winner in Bottom of Ninth

MLB The Boston Red Sox advanced to the ALCS on Monday night after Jed Lowrie delivered a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth that scored Jason Bay to beat the Los Angeles Angels 3-2 and take their best-of-five ALDS series 3-1.

Boston had a 2-0 lead in the fifth after Jacoby Ellsbury plated Mark Kotsay on a fielder’s choice groundout to second base and Dustin Pedroia followed with his first hit of the series, a two-out double off Angels starter John Lackey that scored Jason Varitek for the 2-0 lead.

Red Sox starter Jon Lester looked solid as he went seven strong innings, allowing just four hits while striking out four but he was lifted in eth eight for Hideki Okajima. After the lefty retired the first two batters he walked Mark Teixeira and was lifted by Terry Francona for Justin Masterson. Masterson promptly walked Vladimir Guerrero and after crossing up Varitek to put runners on second and third Masterson gave up a two-run single to Tori Hunter to tie the game 2-2.

Upton provided the first two runs of the game for the Rays as he hit solo shots off White Sox starter Gavin Floyd in the first and third innings for an early 2-0 lead.

Betfair issues court proceedings against RNSW and HRNSW

Racing Betfair today issued proceedings in the Federal Court of Australia challenging the validity of decisions by Racing NSW (RNSW) and Harness Racing NSW (HRNSW) to impose a 1.5% turnover fee for all wagering operators wishing to cover NSW thoroughbred and harness races.

The proceedings in the Federal Court are brought under section 92 of the Constitution, alleging discriminatory conduct in interstate trade and commerce. Betfair succeeded in a separate section 92 action against the Western Australian government earlier this year.

Betfair’s Director, Corporate and Business Affairs, Andrew Twaits, said: “We’re happy to pay a fee to the NSW racing industry on all our wagering revenue but the turnover fee imposed by Racing NSW and Harness Racing NSW is highly discriminatory.

Member Feedback Hi Team,

That was again another boring grand final. Since 2005 with North Queensland, Brisbane 67% and Melbourne 100% owned by News Limited and they own half the game and their teams always in the eight or win the grand final. That is so great for the NRL and Rugby League. I feel there is bias in the NRL AS IT CURRENTLY STANDS. News Limited owns these businesses as Rugby League teams and it is in their own interest to manipulate the system to suit their teams. I will find it interesting how North Queensland and Canberra will ever win a grand final now as they are not owned by Rugby League anymore and Canberra does not have Arthurson and the ARL for their bias means anymore and they have not come close to a Premiership since or will the NRL create more bias and let this happen for the games interest and not the whole interest in the NRL?.

Chicago White Sox Extend Series with Game 3 Win

MLB Dewayne Wise went 1-2 with a big two-run double, A.J. Pierzynski was 2-3 with a two-out RBI and John Danks threw 6 2/3 innings allowing three runs while striking out seven as the Chicago White Sox avoided elimination and bet the visiting Tampa Bay Rays 5-3 on Sunday to force a Game Four in their best-of-five ALDS playoff series.

The Rays jumped in front 1-0 in the second inning when Akinori Iwamura brought Dioner Navarro home with a two-out infield single. Chicago would get even in the bottom of the third though as Pierzynski used a two-out single off Rays starter Matt Garza to plate Jim Thome and even the score.

In the bottom of the fourth Garza ran into more trouble as he gave up a leadoff double to Thome, walked Paul Konerko and then gave up a single to Ken Griffey Jr. to load the bases. Alexei Ramirez then hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored Thome and Dewayne Wise followed with a double that brought home Konerko and Wise for a 4-1 lead.

Ben Roethlisberger Throws 3 Touch Downs

NFL Ben Roethlisberger was 26/41 passing for 309 yards and three touchdowns, Mewelde Moore rushed for 99 yards and Hines Ward had 90 yards receiving and caught the game-winning touchdown with less than two minutes left on the clock as the Pittsburgh Steelers (4-1) beat the Jacksonville Jaguars (2-3) 26-21 on Sunday night.

It didn’t look good early for the Steelers as Roethlisberger tossed a first quarter interception that was returned 72-yards for a touchdown by Rashean Mathis but the Pittsburgh Steelers didn’t buckle and led his team down the field on their next possession and tied the score with a one-yard toss to Heath Miller.

Jacksonville answered with an impressive drive of their own as David Garrard picked up a couple first downs on 3rd and long before Maurice Jones-Drew punched it in from a yard out and the Jaguars were back in front 14-7.

Losman, filling in for Trent Edwards who had been knocked out of the game, hit Lee Evans on an 87-yard touchdown pass to cut the Bills deficit in half.

Randy Moss Has Big Day Out

NFL Randy Moss had 111 yards receiving and a touchdown on five catches, Kevin Faulk had a pair of rushing TDs and the New England Patriots (3-1) offense held the ball for nearly 20 more minutes than the San Francisco 49ers (2-3) in their 30-21 victory on Sunday.

Both quarterbacks looked shaky at the beginning of the first quarter as Patriots’ play caller Matt Cassell tossed an interception on their first possession while 49ers starter J.T. O’Sullivan returned the favor with a pick on the first play following the turnover.

O’Sullivan made up for the pick with a 16-yard touchdown toss to Frank Gore for a 7-0 lead but Cassell answered with a 66-yard TD bomb to Moss to even the score. The action continued in the first quarter as O’Sullivan then moved the 49ers down the field and on their fourth play he hit Isaac Bruce on a 6-yard touchdown pass and San Fran was up 14-7 after one.

NFL In a game that featured two of the best defenses in football it was a late touchdown toss from Kerry Collins to Alge Crumpler that was the difference as the Tennessee Titans (5-0) beat the Baltimore Ravens (2-2) 13-10 on Sunday.

Neither team could get much offense going in the first half as they each settled for field goals to go into the break tied 3-3. Baltimore finally found the endzone early in the third quarter as Le'Ron McClain pounded his way in from a yard out on the Ravens opening drive to put the score at 10-3.
