Brandon Jacobs Carries New York Giants to Opening Game Win

Brandon Jacobs rushed for 116 yards on 21 carries, Plaxico Burress totaled 133 yards on 10 catches and Eli Manning threw for 216 yards on 19/35 passing and added a one-yard touchdown run as the New York Giants scored on their first four possessions to open their NFL season with a 16-7 victory over the Washington Redskins.

The Giants came out looking solid as they took their opening drive 84 yards and grabbed a 7-0 lead after Manning plunged into the endzone from one yard out. After the New York defense held the Redskins to a three and out the Giants offense drove down to the Washington 7-yard-line before settling for a 24-yard field goal from John Carney and a 10-0 advantage.

After the Redskins were forced to punt on their second consecutive possession the Giants once again moved down the field and settled for another Carney field goal.

Washington’s offensive woes continued on their third possession as the Giants forced another three and out and Manning moved New York down to the Washington 29-yeard-line before Carney kicked his third field goal of the half for a 16-0 lead.

On the ensuing kickoff Rock Cartwright gave the Redskins their best field position of the half with a 45-yard return setting up the only scoring drive Washington would have all night. On a 3rd and 11 Jason Campbell found Santana Moss on a 12-yard touchdown pass and Washington went into the half down 16-7.

Defense was the name of the game in the second half as the Redskins punted on their first four possessions. On their fifth possession Campbell moved the Skins into Giants territory but on a 4th and 13 a short pass to Ladell Betts picked up 11-yards and the Giants took over with two minutes left and New York chewed up much of the clock.

The Giants defense allowed just 209 yards of total offense, 84 of those yards on the ground and 11 first downs.
