St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols was named the National League MVP on Monday after collecting 369 points from ballots cast by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Pujols was comfortably ahead o second place finisher Ryan Howard who totaled 308 points after leading the Philadelphia Phillies to their first World Series title since 1980.
For Pujols, the MVP award was his second in his career and came after posting a .357 average with 37 HRs and 116 RBIs. Pujols collected his first MVP award in 2005.
Howard finished second in the MVP balloting after hitting 48 HRs and collecting146 RBIs but his .251 batting average and 199 strikeouts left many voters with questions. Howard won the MVP award in 2006. _________________
