Rams Settle on Leadership Group

Rugby Union The Western Sydney Rams have formally named Waratahs and Eastwood lock Ben Hand as skipper for this year’s inaugural Mazda Australian Rugby Championship.

Waratahs and Wallaby hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau and star Waratahs wing Lachie Turner have been appointed as dual vice-captains.

In the wake of last night’s impressive 28-10 trial win over the Canberra Vikings, head coach Brian Melrose said, the Rams have taken a fresh approach to their leadership group.

“Our set up is a little bit different with the skipper and dual vice-captains but I think in Ben we have strong guy at the helm and two really enthusiastic and impressive young leaders as his deputies,” Melrose said.

“Lachie Turner was the captain out there last night for a long period against the Vikings and he did a great job.

“Tatafu and Lachie are really representative of just how young this team is and rather than shy away from it we’ve embraced it.

“We have several other players who will also contribute to the leadership of the team.

“Benn Robinson brings his Super 14 and Wallaby experience to the table and Mark Howell is a well respected leader among the players.”

The Rams will hold a team function at Parramatta tonight to launch their season which begins with two matches on the road starting with Perth next Friday and the Imagetec Central Coast Rays the week after.
