CEO Moving On

Rugby League

The Sharks announce the resignation of Chief Executive Officer Greg Pierce who will leave the club at the end of the season to accept a senior management position in the building industry.

Pierce, who has been at the Cronulla club in various capacities for a period of 15 years, the last two as CEO, has given three months notice as required by the terms of his current contract and will then take up the new position with a major building company located in Sydney’s western suburbs.

“I have been involved in rugby league for a long time, almost 25 years, but the new position I have accepted is an outstanding opportunity,” he said. “This position was offered some time ago but the company is currently restructuring and the time is right for me to take on this new challenge.”

With the resignation came tributes from some of the leading administrators in the game, including David Gallop, with the CEO of the NRL recognising and praising Pierce’s contribution to the Sharks and to rugby league.

“Greg Pierce has earned a lot of respect in his time as Chief Executive of the Sharks and it’s certainly a disappointment to see him leave the game for what will hopefully only be a while,” Gallop said. “He’s got plenty of Rugby League experience behind him through a number of roles and while I can understand his wish to tackle new challenges in the business world, I’m sure we’ll see him around the game in the future.”

Geoff Carr, the Chief Executive of the ARL, echoed Gallop’s thoughts.

“In Greg’s time in rugby league he has held senior positions with the Australian Kangaroos and backed that up as NSW origin manager this year,” Carr said. “He has been a great contributor to the sport and from both a personal point of view and as far as the ARL is concerned he will be sorely missed.”

Pierce will depart the Sharks at the end of the current season at a time where the club continues to build towards the future, while developments in and around the club’s Woolooware home base indicate exciting times ahead.

“I am excited about my new position, but from the club’s point of view am confident whoever they decide to appoint can bring some new ideas and I look forward to assisting that person to settle into the Sharks role,” Pierce said.

At present the Sharks are finalising plans for a redevelopment of Toyota Park, with a southern grandstand to be constructed and refurbishments to the current facilities already underway, while the car park land to the southeast of the Sharkies Leagues Club has been rezoned, with the club exploring its options as to the development of that land.
