Schwartzel Wins In Madrid

Golf Charl Schwartzel captured his third European Tour title after a composed final round of 66 gave him a three-shot win on 19-under at the Madrid Masters.

Beginning the final day only one ahead, the 24-year-old South African had five birdies and kept a bogey off his card.

Midlander Robert Rock, vying to retain his card, had nine birdies to go second but bogeyed the last to share fourth.

Ricardo Gonzalez shot a 68 to take second, while Ryder Cup veteran Miguel Angel Jimenez was in a tie for 29th.

Gonzalez, who played the final nine holes in 27 on Saturday, needed something similarly spectacular, but could only par the first eight holes before making his first birdie at the ninth.

Another birdie at the next reduced the gap to one, but the 13th was a pivotal hole, Gonzalez bogeyed and Schwartzel birdied from six feet.

Schwartzel kept the ball in play for the vast majority of his round, but on the rare occasions when he did stray off line his recovery play was in good order.

FINAL ROUND LEADERBOARD:
-19 C Schwartzel (SA), -16 R Gonzalez (Arg), -15 P Larrazabal (Spa), -14 A Quiros (Spa), R Rock (GB), -12 P Waring (GB)
