Jed Lowrie Gets Game-Winner in Bottom of Ninth

MLB The Boston Red Sox advanced to the ALCS on Monday night after Jed Lowrie delivered a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth that scored Jason Bay to beat the Los Angeles Angels 3-2 and take their best-of-five ALDS series 3-1.

Boston had a 2-0 lead in the fifth after Jacoby Ellsbury plated Mark Kotsay on a fielder’s choice groundout to second base and Dustin Pedroia followed with his first hit of the series, a two-out double off Angels starter John Lackey that scored Jason Varitek for the 2-0 lead.

Red Sox starter Jon Lester looked solid as he went seven strong innings, allowing just four hits while striking out four but he was lifted in eth eight for Hideki Okajima. After the lefty retired the first two batters he walked Mark Teixeira and was lifted by Terry Francona for Justin Masterson. Masterson promptly walked Vladimir Guerrero and after crossing up Varitek to put runners on second and third Masterson gave up a two-run single to Tori Hunter to tie the game 2-2.

After Scot Shields set the Red Sox down in the bottom of the eighth Kendry Morales opened the top of the ninth with a double off Masterson. Reggie Willits, running for Morales, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt to bring Erick Aybar to the plate and Manny Delcarmen to the mound. On a 2-0 count Aybar missed a squeeze and Varitek caught Willits on the way back to third for the second out. Aybar then grounded out to first to end the inning.

Shields returned for the bottom of the ninth and after striking out J.D. Drew to start the inning Jason Bay followed with a double and after Mark Kotsay lined out to Teixeira for the second out Jed Lowire lined a ground ball between first and second to plate the winning run.

Boston will now face their AL East rival Tampa Bay Rays in the ALCS.
