Randy Moss Has Big Day Out

NFL Randy Moss had 111 yards receiving and a touchdown on five catches, Kevin Faulk had a pair of rushing TDs and the New England Patriots (3-1) offense held the ball for nearly 20 more minutes than the San Francisco 49ers (2-3) in their 30-21 victory on Sunday.

Both quarterbacks looked shaky at the beginning of the first quarter as Patriots’ play caller Matt Cassell tossed an interception on their first possession while 49ers starter J.T. O’Sullivan returned the favor with a pick on the first play following the turnover.

O’Sullivan made up for the pick with a 16-yard touchdown toss to Frank Gore for a 7-0 lead but Cassell answered with a 66-yard TD bomb to Moss to even the score. The action continued in the first quarter as O’Sullivan then moved the 49ers down the field and on their fourth play he hit Isaac Bruce on a 6-yard touchdown pass and San Fran was up 14-7 after one.

That was about all San Francisco would do though as New England controlled the rest of the half and when Faulk ran it in from 2-yards out the Patriots had their first lead of the game at 17-14. That lead was extended to 24-14 midway through the third quarter when Faulk added his second TD of the game, another 2-yarder.

Stephen Gostkowski kicked his second field goal of the game early in the fourth quarter to push New England’s lead to 27-14 but San Fran answered with an 80-yard drive that ended with O’Sullivan hitting Bruce on a 5-yard touchdown pass to climb to within 27-21 but the Patriots chewed up nearly six minutes before Gostkowski booted his third field goal for a 30-21 lead and the 49ers had no more answers.

San Francisco attempted just 18 running plays all day and converted just 1-9 third down attempts.
