No Chocolates for the Hussler

Racing The Hussler was denied his eighth Group One title in 12 months at the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington on Saturday afternoon, left behind in a classy field led by in-form gelding Littorio.

The Nigel Blackiston-trained Littorio made a strong surge on the outside to haul in pacesetter Extend and cruise to the post by a length-and-a-half for his second Group One win and his first in 17 months.

Master O'Reilly and Zipping crossed the line second and third respectively.

Littorio ($9.70) attracted late interest in the market after impressive recent runs in the Underwood and Makybe Diva Stakes, where he finished third to Weekend Hussler on both occasions.

Weekend Hussler's trainer Ross McDonald is targeting Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup clean sweep, a feat only previously achieved by Rising Fast in 1954.

But doubts over Hussler's ability to compete beyond the mile are again like to surface as he fell away despite making strong strides forward at the 1,200m mark.
