Jason Bay, Jon Lester Power Boston Red Sox Past Los Angeles Angels in Game One

MLB Jason Bay hit a two-run homer run in the top of the sixth inning, Jon Lester pitched seven strong innings striking out seven and allowing one unearned run and the Boston Red Sox bullpen shut the door over the final two innings to secure a 4-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels and take a 1-0 lead in their best-of-five playoff series.

The Angels grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third after Garret Anderson scored on a single from Tori Hunter following an error by Red Sox shortstop Jed Lowrie on a Vladimir Guerrero that kept the inning alive.

Boston responded in the top of the sixth as Kevin Youkilis drew a walk following a David Ortiz pop-out and after J.D. Drew struck out Jason Bay stepped to the plate and hit a 2-2 fastball from Angels starter John Lackey deep into the leftfield seats.

In the bottom of the eighth inning the Angels looked like they might have something going against Red Sox reliever Justin Masterson after Vladimir Guerrero singled with one out and Tori Hunter hit a flair over first base but Guerrero tried to take third and was thrown out. Masterson then retired Howie Kendrick on a groundball to Lowrie to get out of the inning.

Jacoby Ellsbury provided some insurance in the top of the ninth when he singled off Scot Shields to bring home Lowrie and David Ortiz plated Ellsbury with a two-out single. Jonathan Papelbon then came on in the bottom of the ninth and shut the door.

The Los Angeles Angels will again host the Boston Red Sox on Friday with Ervin Santana set to face Daisuke Matsuzaka. The game is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. ET.
