Roger Federer Blasts Andy Murray in Final

Tennis Roger Federer moved one step closer to tying Pete Sampras for all-time Grand Slam singles titles after running over Andy Murray in the finals of the 2008 U.S. Open on Monday evening 6-2, 7-5, 6-2, his fifth consecutive U.S. Open title and 13th Grand Slam singles title.

Federer was dominant from the start as he scored winners on 79 percent of his first serves and after taking the first two sets Murray, who was playing in his first Grand Slam singles finals, didn’t look like he was going to put up much of a fight in the third. The 27-year-old Swiss star made the most of his opportunities as he converted 6 of 8 break point opportunities.

The win was Federer’s first Grand Slam singles title of 2008, continuing a streak of at least one Grand Slam title every year since 2003. Federer has five Wimbledon titles, three Australian Open titles and five U.S. Open titles. He has reached the finals at the French Open the past three years but has fallen each time to Rafael Nadal.
