Rafael Nadal Drops Opening Set but Fights Way Past Mardy Fish, Into Semis

Tennis Rafael Nadal had no real answer for the powerful serve of Mardy Fish in the first set of their quarterfinals match on Wednesday night but the Spaniard regrouped and played his style of tennis to drop the American in a four set battle 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the semifinals at the 2008 U.S. Open.

Nadal once again relied upon his controlled style of play, placing 73 percent of his first serves in play and winning 74 percent of those offerings. In the end it was Fish who looked out of water as he committed 53 unforced errors compared to the 19 from Nadal.

Nadal has had an amazing 2008 having already won the French Open, Wimbledon and the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. His victory on Wednesday night marked the first time he has ever advanced to the semifinals at the U.S. Open and a win in New York would be Grand Slam title number six.
