Gilles Muller Upsets Nikolay Davydenko

Tennis Gilles Muller used a punishing serve to upset fifth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko in four sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (12-10) at the U.S. Open on Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinals.

Muller pounded out 20 aces in the match to make up for 45 unforced errors and made the most of his break point opportunities, converting three of his five chances. In contrast Davydenko managed just 5 aces in the match but committed only 22 unforced errors. Davydenko was done in by his inability to capitalize on break point opportunities, cracking Muller’s serve on just 2 of 15 opportunities.

Muller had never made it past the second round of a Grand Slam singles event prior to the 2008 U.S. Open.
