QANTAS SOCCEROOS v URUGUAY

Football The Qantas Socceroos suffered a 2-1 loss against Uruguay at Sydney’s Telstra Stadium as the two nations met for the first time since the epic World Cup qualifying matches in November 2005.

A crowd of 61,795 saw Australia take an early lead through Mile Sterjovski before goals in each for Diego Forlan and Alvaro Recoba for Uruguay.

The match was the first home loss for Australia since May 2004 when Turkey defeated Australia 1-0 in Melbourne.

There were Australian debuts for Australian goalkeeper Brad Jones and Melbourne Victory’s Danny Allsopp, plus there were also home debuts for five other players.

The Australian squad will assemble in Singapore on June 21 with their final match prior to the AFC Asian Cup against Singapore on June 30.

The 2007 AFC Asian Cup will be jointly held in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam July 7-29.  Australia have been drawn against Oman (July 8), Iraq (July 13) and Thailand (July 16) with all group matches to be played in Bangkok.
