2008 Beijing Olympics Results: Boxing

Boxing Rakhim Chakhkiev Wins Gold Medal in Men’s Boxing Heavy Weight Division

Russia’s Rakhim Chakhkiev exacted some revenge for a 2007 loss to Clemente Russo at the World Championships by beating the Italian in the gold medal match of the heavy weight division in men’s boxing at 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Both fighters remained cautious in the early stages of the fight with Chakhkiev taking a 1-0 lead in the first only to have Russo even tings up in the second with a 2-1 round. No points were scored in the third, setting the stage for a fourth round for the gold.

While the action was steady it was Chakhkiev that managed to score a pair of points to take the fight 4-2.

James Degale Hangs On to Win Gold Medal in Epic Men’s Boxing Middle Weight Bout

Great Britain’s James Degale hung on to win gold in the men’s boxing middle weight division at the 2008 Beijing Olympics on Saturday, out-pointing Cuba’s Emilio Correa Bayeaux 16-14

Degale looked like he would cruise through the fight after building a 6-1 advantage in the first round and boosting his lead to 10-4 after two but Bayeaux came to life in the third and used a 6-1 frame to pull to within two points.

In the final round both fighters exchanged scoring blows twice and in the end it was Degale that took the gold.

Felix Diaz Uses Big Third Round to Gold Medal in Men’s Boxing Light Welter Weight

Felix Diaz had a close fight on his hands in the gold medal bout with Manus Boonjumnong through the first two rounds but in the third round the Dominican put forth a rally that his Thai opponent couldn’t overcome and eventually won on points to claim gold in the men’s boxing light welter weight division at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Through the first two rounds both fighters were even at 2-2 but Diaz used an 8-1 third round to take command and win 12-4 after the fourth.

Diaz earned the first gold medal for the Dominican Republic at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Vasyl Lomachenko Dominate in Gold Medal Victory in Men’s Boxing Feather Weight

Vasyl Lomachenko came out like a man possessed and that wasn’t good news for Khedafi Djelkhir as the Ukrainian carved up the Frenchman in the first round before the referee stepped in to stop the fight, earning Lomachenko the gold medal in men’s boxing feather weight division at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Lomachenko was up 9-1 in the first round before referee Roberto Servide ended the fight at 1:51 in the opening frame.

The Ukrainian was absolutely dominant throughout the Beijing Games, easily out-pointing his previous opponents including a 10-1 display against Turkey’s Yakup Kilic to reach the gold medal match.

Somjit Jongjohor Wins Boxing Gold in Men’s Fly Weight

Considered by many to be the best boxer at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Thailand’s Somjit Jongjohor proved the talk was warranted as he claimed boxing gold on Saturday beating Cuba’s Andris Laffita Hernandez on points.

Somjit finished the first round with a 2-0 lead and opened a 6-0 lead after the second round as he continued to frustrate Hernandez, not allowing any open shots.

Hernandez managed to get one point in the third but by that stage the match was decided and it was just a matter of hearing the bell at the end of the fourth round.
