2008 Beijing Olympics Results: Track & Field

Track & Field LaShawn Merritt Embarasses Jeremy Wariner for 400m Gold Medal

LaShawn Merritt wins the men's 400-meters as the U.S. sweeps the medals in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China.

Merritt ran a 43.75, a full-second ahead of Jeremy Wariner, who ran a 44.74. David Neville gave the USA a bronze, running a 44.80.

Merrit's 43.75 is the fifth-fastest time in track history, behind Wariner's 43.45 in the 2007 World Championships, which is third all-time.

Merritt and Wariner have been rivals in the 400m since Wariner won the gold in the 2006 IAAF World Athletics Final. Merritt won bronze. Merritt then won the gold in the open 400m final in the 2008 USA Track and Field Championship as Wariner won silver.

Cuba's Dayron Robles Wins Gold Medal in 110m Hurdles

Dayron Robles of Cuba won the gold medal in the 110m hurdles in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China.

Robles ran a 12.93 in the 110m hurdles, outlasting two Americans, David Payne and David Oliver, to win the gold medal. Payne ran a 13.17, while Oliver ran a 13.18.

Robles won the 110m hurdles in the 2007 IAAF World Athletics Final, but came in fourth in the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, Japan.

Robles is the world record holder for the 110m hurdles with a 12.87, which he ran earlier this year in June.

Jamaica's Veronica Campbell-Brown Wins Women's 200m

Veronica Campbell-Brown of Jamaica won the gold medal in the women's 200m on Thursday in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Campbell-Brown ran the 200m in 21.74 seconds , beating US star Allyson Felix, who ran a 21.93. Campbell-Brown's Jamaican teammate Kerron Stewart won the bronze with 22.00.

Campbell-Brown defended her gold medal from the 2004 Athens Olympics, in which Felix won the silver as well. Felix was the world champion in the event after winning gold in the 2007 World Championships as Campbell-Brown won silver.

The U.S. and Jamaica entered the track event with three runners each in the 200m finals. USA's Muna Lee was fourth with 22.01 and Marshevet Hooker followed with 22.34. Jamaica's Sherone Simpson was sixth with 22.36.

Jamaica has swept the men's and women's 100m and 200m as they continue their dominance in track and field.

Usain Bolt set the world and Olympic record in both the 100m (9.69) and 200m (19.30). Bolt became the first runner since Carl Lewis in 1984 to win gold medals in the same Olympic Games and the first in history to set world records in both during the same Olympics.

Shelly Ann Frazer, Simpson and Stewart swept the women's 100m as Frazer won the gold.
