Jamaica's Usain Bolt Sets World Record, Wins Gold in 200m

Track & Field Usain Bolt of Jamaica set his second world record in the Olympic Games, winning the gold medal in the 200-meters in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing on Wednesday.

Four days after setting the world and Olympic record for the 100m, Bolt, whose nickname is "Lightning", ran a 19.30, breaking Michael Johnson's 12-year record by .02 seconds. In addition, Bolt turns 22 on Thursday.

Bolt became the first track runner to win the 100m and 200m in the same Olympic Games since Carl Lewis in 1984 and just the fourth since Jesse Owens in 1936. Bolt became the ninth all-time to accomplish the feat.

Bolt, who stands 6-foot-5, ran a 9.69 in the 100m final on Saturday to his own world record of 9.72.

In the 200m finals, Wallace Spearmon of the U.S. placed third, but was disqualified for leaving his lane, a decision that U.S. officials protested.

The decision left Churandy Martina of Netherlands Antilles with the silver medal and Shawn Crawford of the U.S., the defending Olympic champion, with the bronze. Martina ran a 19.82, almost half-second behind Bolt, while Crawford ran a 19.96.

Bolt's victory gives Jamaica a 3-for-3 sweep thus far in the Olympic sprints. On Thursday, the women's 200m will include three Jamaicans with gold-medal potential: Veronica Campbell-Brown, Sherone Simpson and Kerron Stewart.

While Michael Phelps' eight-gold medal feat has been the story of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Bolt's dominance in his fields is more than a footnote as he solidifies his stake as the "World's Fastest Man".
