Usain Bolt Advances to 200-Meter Track Semifinals

Track & Field Usain Bolt, the world's fastest man, qualified for the 200-meter semifinals Monday at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Bolt had the fifth-best qualifying time after his heat for the 200-meter quarterfinals with a time of 20.29 seconds. Brian Dzingai of Zimbabwe came in first at 20.23.

Bolt, the 25-year old Jamaican, set a world and Olympic record in the 100-meters final, the most anticipated track and field event of the Olympics. Bolt won the gold medal in historic fashion, running a time of 9.69 seconds while pounding his chest with 15-20 meters left in the race.

Bolt attempts to become the first sprinter since Carl Lewis in 1984 to win the gold medal in both the 100-meter and 200-meter events in a single Olympic Games.

American Walter Dix, who won the bronze medal in the 100-meters, came in third in the 200-meter finals.

Sheena Johnson of the U.S. ran the fastest qualifying time in the 400-meter hurdles (54.07) on Monday, while the U.S. team took to the top three qualifying times in the 100-meter hurdles with Lolo Jones, Damu Cherry and Dawn Harper.
