Michael Phelps Nabs Gold No. 8 with Men’s 4 X 100 Medley Relay Win

Talkin Sport Michael Phelps capped off the most successful Olympic showing in history with his eighth gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics on Sunday after the United States won the men’s 4 x 100 medley relay in Olympic and world record time.

Phelps, Aaron Peirsol, Brendan Hansen and Jason Lezak powered their way to a 3:29.34 for the historic gold, touching the wall just ahead of the Australian team of Eamon Sullivan, Andrew Lauterstein, Brenton Rickard, and Hayden Stoeckel who finished in 3:30.04 for the silver medal.

Japan, made up of Kosuke Kitajima, Hisayoshi Sato, Takuro Fujii and Junichi Miyashita, finished in 3:31.18 for the bronze medal.

With the victory Phelps snapped the former record of seven gold medals won at a single Olympics achieved by U.S. swimmer Mark Spitz in 1972.
