Track and Field Events Begin

Track & Field The track and field events for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing begin today.

Tyson Gay (U.S.) and Jamaica's Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell will all compete in the heats for the men's 100-meters, which is one of the most anticipated events of the Olympic Games.

Gay, the world champion in the 100-meters and 200-meters, has run the fastest 100 in history: a wind-aided 9.68 seconds. Bolt holds the world record at 9.72. Powell isn't far behind at 9.74. The trio has the eight fastest times in history.

The women's heptathlon, men's hammer throw, men's shot put and the women's 800-meters are all on the schedule.
