James Blake Upsets Roger Federer in Tennis

Tennis James Blake upset Roger Federer on Wednesday, ending Federer's bid for his first Olympic singles medal in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Serena Williams was also upset by No. 5-seeded Elena Dementieva of Russia, becoming the first upset in the women's singles tournament. Williams lost 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to Dementieva.

Blake defeated Federer, the world's top-ranked tennis player, 6-4, 7-6 (2). Federer was also upset in Wimbledon last month to Rafael Nadal, which certainly will force Federer to relinquish his No. 1 ranking after over four years of being on top.

Federer's loss means that he will not have a rematch against Spain's Nadal in the men's singles final, a rivalry that is considered the best in recent tennis history.

Federer was expected to redeem himself during the Beijing Olympics after losing in the singles semifinals in Sydney and in the second round in Athens.

Blake entered the match as the No. 8 seed. Blake is a first-time Olympian at age 28 and the lone U.S. male to survive the first round of singles.

Williams' loss came after the U.S. team had won 12 consecutive matches over the past three days. Williams, the No. 4 seed in the singles tournament, remained in contention for a doubles medal and played in a second-round match later with her sister Venus.
