Dolphins' Jason Taylor Traded to Washington Redskins

Talkin Sport The Washington Redskins acquired Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Taylor in a trade on Sunday.

The Redskins traded a 2009 second-round pick and a 2010 sixth-round pick to the Miami Dolphins for Taylor.

According to ESPN's John Clayton, Taylor said that he was not going to renegotiate his contract and will play the final two years of his current contract, which will pay him $8.1 million this season. The Redskins were $9 million under the salary cap, allowing them room to make the abrupt deal.

The Redskins' starting defensive end Philip Daniels tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee on Sunday and will miss the entire season. Reserve defensive end Alex Buzbee is also lost for the season after rupturing his Achilles' tendon on Sunday afternoon.

The Redskins were obviously in dire need for a defensive end, making the decision to trade for Taylor, the 2006 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, in just hours. Taylor was already in a tug-of-war with the Dolphins organization. The turmoil began when the team went through an overhaul of executives, naming Bill Parcells as executive vice president of football operations. However, Taylor didn't win over the known "tough guy" by skipping all offseason workouts to participate in ABC's "Dancing With The Stars".

Taylor, 33, has played 11 NFL seasons, all with Miami, and has started every game each of the past eight years. He had 11 sacks during the 2007 season, giving him 117 over his career, the most of any active player in the NFL.

Prior to the trade, the Redskins were expected to draft a pass-rushing defensive end in the 2008 draft. However, when they focused on offense due to new head coach Jim Zorn, it was uncertain how they would fill that void. Now the 'Skins have one of the best in the business.
