Jie Zheng Continues Improbable Run

Tennis Jie Zheng’s Cinderella run through Wimbledon lives another day as the 24-year old beat Nicole Vaidisova 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 on Tuesday to advance to her first semifinals at a Grand Slam event. In reality Tuesday’s match was Zheng’s first quarterfinals match as well.

Once again it was Zheng’s discipline that proved her greatest asset as she limited herself to 18 unforced errors while Vaidisova committed 39 unforced errors in the match. Zheng was also able to buckle down when Vaidisova had break point opportunities as she surrendered her serve just twice despite facing breakpoint ten times.

Prior to Tuesday’s match the furthest Zheng had ever reached at Wimbledon was a 3rd round loss in 2006. She has reached the semifinals after beating some big names, including number one seed Ana Ivanovic and Agnes Szavay.

Zheng will now face Serena Williams in the semifinals.
