Elena Dementieva Nearly Blows Huge Lead but Manages to Knock Off Nadia Petrova

Tennis Elena Dementieva became the second woman to advance into the Wimbledon semifinals on Tuesday as the Russian beat fellow countrywoman Nadia Petrova in a strange three-setter 6-1, 6-7 (6-8, 6-3. Dementieva, seeded fifth at the All England Club, is the highest ranked woman remaining at Wimbledon after Ana Ivanovic, Jelena Jankovic, Maria Sharapova and Svetlana Kuznetsova fell earlier in the Grand Slam event.

Dementieva nearly joined that list after blowing a 5-2 lead in the second set and allowing Petrova to capture the set and what appeared to be momentum but Dementieva managed to right the ship and looked strong in the third set to move on.

Dementieva has never won a Grand Slam singles title, she finished second at the 2004 French Open and the 2004 U.S. Open.
