Floyd Mayweather Jr. Retires from Boxing

Boxing
Floyd Mayweather Jr., whom many considered to be the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world, announced his retirement from boxing Friday.

Mayweather, the undefeated welterweight champion, announced Friday that he was cancelling his highly-touted rematch with Oscar de la Hoya on Sept. 20.

"It is with a heavy heart that I write you this message today," Mayweather, 32, said in a statement. "I have decided to permanently retire from boxing. This decision was not an easy one for me to make as boxing is all I have done since I was a child. However, these past few years have been extremely difficult for me to find the desire and joy to continue in the sport."

Mayweather (39-0, 25 KOs), also known as "Pretty Boy Floyd", won a bronze medal in the 1996 Olympics and went on to win world championships at junior lightweight, lightweight, junior welterweight, welterweight and junior middleweight.

Mayweather was also well known for competing on the fifth season of Dancing with the Stars where he was the fourth person eliminated. On May 25, he was the honorary starter of the Indianapolis 500.
