2009 LPGA TOUR SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED

Ladies Professional Golf Association Commissioner (LPGA) Carolyn F. Bivens today announced the official money event portion of the 2009 LPGA Tour schedule that features 31 official money events and the spirited biennial Solheim Cup. Several unofficial money events are expected to be announced by the end of the year. The announcement was made during a press conference at the season-ending ADT Championship at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Fla.
“Given the current state of the global economy, we view today’s release of our 2009 Tour schedule as a barometer of the stability, appeal and value of our players and property,” said Bivens. “Each and every year, the LPGA schedule evolves with a natural ebb and flow of events, but like many businesses and individuals, the state of the global economy and the economic crisis we are all facing has resulted in a slightly different tournament landscape for 2009. With 31 events in 10 countries, we remain focused on providing market-based playing opportunities for our members, as well as providing fans with a great entertainment experience across the schedule.”

IGF Presents Case for Golf's Inclusion in 2016 Olympic Games

Representatives of the International Golf Federation formally presented their case for golf to become an Olympic sport during a meeting today with the International Olympic Committee Programme Commission at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne.
Making the presentation were Peter Dawson, chief executive of The R&A and joint secretary of the IGF, and PGA TOUR executive Ty Votaw, Executive Director of the IGF Olympic Golf Committee.
Among the key points they highlighted were golf’s worldwide participation and diversity; the sport’s economic and charitable impact; and its commitment to the youth of the world. Golf, they noted, has grown significantly in these three areas and would continue to grow as an Olympic sport, thus influencing the relevance and attraction of the Olympic Games.

Garcia clinches home town victory

Sergio Garcia captured his first European Tour title since 2005 with a three-stroke victory on his home course at the Castello Masters.
The Spaniard, 28, sank five birdies in a four-under-par 67 to see off the challenge of Swede Peter Hedblom (66).
After starting the final round four shots adrift, Hedblom only needed six holes to draw level.
But Garcia held his nerve and finished on 20 under par after a bogey five at the 17th ended Hedblom's hopes.

SCOTLAND WINS WORLD AMATEUR TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP BY NINE STROKES

In blustery conditions, Scotland claimed its first Eisenhower Trophy with a nine-stroke victory in the 2008 World Amateur Team Championship.
“We set out to try to win but to go out and do it is unbelievable,” said Scotsman Callum Macaulay, who shot 1-under-par 72 on the Royal Adelaide Golf Club.
Combining Macaulay’s score with a 2-over-par 75 from Gavin Dear, Scotland finished with a 20-under-par total of 560 for 72 holes, the second-best score since three-player teams were instituted in 2002.

USA LEADS WORLD AMATEUR BY TWO STROKES

The USA, bolstered by matching 5-under-par 68s from Rickie Fowler and Jamie Lovemark, opened up a two-stroke lead over Scotland at 10-under-par 136 in the first round of the 2008 World Amateur Team Championship.
Playing at the par-73 Royal Adelaide Golf Club, the Americans capitalized on optimal scoring conditions.
“We are off to a good start. All three played well,” USA captain Walter Driver said of his team. “Conditions were benign here at Royal Adelaide. Until we play both courses, it’s hard to tell exactly where you stack up against the field.”

Camilo Villegas clinched the season-ending Tour Championship in Atlanta after defeating Spain's Sergio Garcia in a sudden-death play-off.
The Colombian carded a five-under round of 66, while overnight leader Garcia saw his three-shot advantage evaporate after three bogeys in 10 holes.
Villegas's superb round meant the tournament went down to a play-off.
And he won his second successive PGA Tour victory with a par three on the 18th, which Garcia bogeyed.
