World Cup 2010 European Qualifier Group Eight Results

Football Group Eight in the World Cup European qualifiers saw limited action on Saturday with two matches but the results could prove important for who books a trip to South Africa in 2010. Italy continues to struggle offensively as they played to a 0-0 draw with Bulgaria while Georgia and Cyprus each earned their first point as they played to a 1-1 draw.

Heading into Saturday’s match Italy managed to put two goals on the board against Cyprus and two goals against Georgia but both matches resulted in wins and they could have really taken control of the group with a win against Bulgaria but could only manage to draw.

World Cup 2010 European Qualifier Group Seven

Football Saturday’s play in Group Seven World Cup European qualifying action did little to clear the picture as Serbia shot to the top with a win over Lithuania and both countries are now carrying six points while France and Romania played to a draw and now have four points apiece and Austria now sits on four after drawing with Faroe Islands.

Serbia made a statement on Saturday as they blanked Lithuania 3-0, an obvious sign that they had put their loss to France behind them. With the win Serbia and Lithuania are each carrying six points but Serbia has the edge on point differential.

Spain unchallenged at the top

Football There are no changes to the top three in the latest edition of the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking: European champions Spain remain unchallenged at the top and have even managed to extend their lead over their nearest challengers Italy and Germany. Things are far more exciting in the next few spots in the ranking. Brazil (4th, up 2), the Netherlands (5th, down 1) and Croatia (6th, down 1) are all within a few points of each other and, together with Argentina (7th), are locked in an exciting head-to-head battle. Russia (9th, up 3) have moved up three places, thus managing to break back into the top ten, at the expense of Turkey (13th, down 3).

No Place at Sydney for Milligan

Football Out-of-contract defender Mark Milligan will not be welcome back at Sydney FC should he eventually give up on his European dream.

The 23-year-old Olyroo left the A-League club at the end of last season to pursue a career abroad but is yet to be picked up.

As recently as last week he was trialling with German club Werder Bremen.

“You don't go out with old girlfriends and you don't take old players back,” Kosmina said after training Friday, where Sydney were preparing for Saturday night's clash with Queensland.
