Cousins allowed to play again

The rehabilitation of former West Coast Eagles star Ben Cousins is almost complete, with the AFL Commission approving his return to the competition for the 2009 season.
Cousins was de-registered by the AFL last year for bringing the game into disrepute.
He is now eligible to nominate for next month's preseason draft.
AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou outlined a series of conditions upon which Cousins's returns will hinge.

HAWKS WIN

Hawthorn has won its first AFL premiership for 17 years, emphatically toppling the all-conquering Cats by 26 points in a stirring grand final upset at the MCG this afternoon.
Hawthorn's ensemble of grit and pace combined to ride roughshod over the defending premiers in the all-important third term, before running away with a memorable 18.7 (115) to 11.23 (89) victory.
It is the Hawks' 10th premiership flag and their first since 1991 in what has been a lengthy rebuilding phase for the club that has lasted more than a decade. | |

AFL and Alcohol

The AFL and AFL Players Association will circulate a draft policy do*****ent on responsible alcohol consumption to the 16 clubs, seeking their feedback and that of key national drug and alcohol experts as it moves to introduce a framing policy with guidelines that all AFL clubs can use to develop their own responsible alcohol policies.
AFL Football Operations Manager Adrian Anderson today said the AFL Commission had been briefed on the work done in developing the draft AFL Responsible Alcohol Framing Policy in concert with the AFL Players' Association and this would now be distributed to the clubs and other stakeholders for their views.
"The AFL, the Players' Association and our clubs understand that we have a responsibility to promote responsible drinking within the AFL and among the 16 clubs, the players and staff," Mr Anderson said.

40,000th Member commits to Carlton

The Carlton Football Club has secured its history-making 40,000th member, after Challenge cancer patient Ben Clark was presented with his 2008 membership card by captain Chris Judd.
Through Challenge – supporting kids with cancer - Ben had been invited into the Carlton change rooms to meet the players following Wednesday afternoon’s training session. Judd sprung the surprise in presenting Ben with the membership card which, along with a selection of Carlton merchandise, was paid for by the playing group.
“We knew Ben was coming down and thought it would be good to present him with his own membership as well as some Carlton gear that he can wear and put up in his bedroom,” Judd said. | |

Gram re-signs with the Saints

Jason Gram has re-signed with the Saints for a further three years, cementing his commitment to Club and all things red, white and black.
The creative defender followed up his breakthrough 2006 season with another solid year, averaging 18.5 disposals and finishing sixth in the best and fairest.
