Rafer Alston, Matt Barnes Ejected in Houston Rockets-Phoenix Suns Brawl

Rafer Alston and Matt Barnes were ejected after a fight during the Houston Rockets-Phoenix Suns game on Wednesday night.
Late in the third quarter, Barnes, the Suns forward, threw his shoulder into Alston after he set a pick for McGrady, who knocked down a three-point shot. Alston ran up to Barnes and gave him a light shove as both teams began to converge around half-court.
Steve Nash ran into the brawl full speed, when McGrady shoved him to the ground. On his way down, Nash grabbed Alston. Shaquille O'Neal then pushed McGrady and Yao Ming to the ground. Coaches, players and referees began to separate O'Neal, Nash and Alston.

Greg Oden Scores Three Points in First Full NBA Game

Greg Oden scored three points in his first full NBA game as the Portland Trail Blazers defeated the Miami Heat, 104-96, on Wednesday night.

In his first game this season, he suffered an ankle sprain in the first quarter, forcing him to miss six games.
Oden's first NBA points came with 49.4 seconds left in the opening quarter, as he grabbed a rebound over Joel Pryzbilla and threw down a hard one-handed dunk.

ESPN 2008-09 Preseason NBA Power Rankings

The Boston Celtics, the reigning NBA Champions, enter the preseason at No. 1 on the 2008-09 preseason NBA Power Rankings by ESPN.
The Celtics, who had the NBA’s best record (66-16) before winning the NBA Finals, head into the 2008-09 season as ESPN’s favorite to repeat. Led by “The Big 3” of Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce, the Celtics maintain the majority of last season’s roster, except key reserve James Posey.
The L.A. Lakers, who lost to the Celtics in the NBA Finals, remains No. 2 as they enter the season. The Lakers, who are led by NBA MVP Kobe Bryant, will return Andrew Bynum, who missed all of the playoffs due to an injury.

NBA allows expanded use of instant replay

The use of instant replay will be expanded in the upcoming NBA season following approval by the league's board of governors on Thursday.
Referees will be allowed to review video to determine if a field goal was a 2- or 3-point attempt, or to decide if a shooting foul was committed behind the arc and warrants three shots instead of two.
"We've been playing with the 3-point line, what, 30 years? There are mistakes that happen, and there are 2-pointers that are missed. But that's also part of the game. Guys step on the out of bounds line, guys are in the 3-second lane too long, guys hang on the rim — there are a lot of things like that."
