Don Wakamatsu Becomes First Asian-American Manager in MLB

MLB Don Wakamatsu has become the first Asian-American manager in Major League Baseball after accepting the job offer from the Seattle Mariners.

Wakamatsu spent last year as the bench coach for the Oakland Athletics and before that spent five years with the Texas Rangers. The 45-year-old spent nearly his entire professional playing career in the minor leagues but did catch 18 games in a Chicago White Sox uniform in 1991, all those games when knuckleballer Charlie Hough was on hill.

National League Gold Glove Award Winners Announced, Greg Maddux Collects No. 18

MLB The National League Rawlings Gold Glove Award winners were announced on Wednesday and Greg Maddux added to his record haul with his 18th trophy, two more than third baseman Brooks Robinson and pitcher Jim Kaat.

Maddux owns more Gold Glove awards than all other winners on the 2008 list combined. Much of that is due to five players receiving the award for the first time.

St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina, San Diego Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips, Philadelphia Phillies center fielder Shane Victorino and Pittsburgh Pirates centerfielder Nate McLouth all earned Gold Gloves for the first time.

Philadelphia Phillies Win World Series

MLB Brad Lidge locked up the Philadelphia Phillies first World Series title since 1980 and just their second in their 126-year history after striking out Eric Hinske in the bottom of the ninth and sealing a 4-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.

With the game tied 2-2 and resuming play in the bottom of the sixth inning Geoff Jenkins doubled off Grant Balfour and then moved to third on a Jimmy Rollins sacrifice. Jayson Werth then followed with a single to plate Jenkins and give the Phillies a 3-2 advantage.

Tampa tied the game in the top of the seventh though as Ryan Madson surrendered a one-out solo homer to Rocco Baldelli. Madson then gave up a single to Jason Bartlett who took second on a sacrifice bunt by J.P. Howell setting up a showdown between J.C. Romero and Akinori Iwamura. Iwamura hit a grounder up the middle that was gloved by Chase Utley and rather than try and get Iwamura at first he caught Bartlett trying to score on the play as Carlos Ruiz applied the tag at the plate to end the inning.

Philadelphia Phillies One Win Away from Title

MLB Ryan Howard was 3-4 with a pair of home runs and 5 RBIs, Jimmy Rollins went 3-5 with a pair of doubles and three runs scored and Joe Blanton tossed six innings allowing just two runs on four hits and added a solo blast at the plate as the Philadelphia Phillies powered past the Tampa Bay Rays 10-2 on Sunday to take a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven World Series and now need just one more win to collect their second championship in franchise history.

Philadelphia got on the board in the first inning after Rays starter Andy Sonnanstine walked in a run and in the third they moved in front 2-0 after Pedro Feliz hit a two-out single to left that plated Chase Utley.

Philadelphia Phillies Top Tampa Bay Rays in Ninth to Grab 2-1 Lead

MLB Jimmy Rollins went 2-4 with a run scored, Chase Utley and Ryan Howard each homered and Carlos Ruiz went 2-3 with a homer and the game winning hit in the ninth inning to lift the Philadelphia Phillies past the Tampa Bay Rays 5-4 on Saturday night and grab a 2-1 lead in the 2008 World Series.

The Phillies jumped in the lead 1-0 in the first inning after Jimmy Rollins led off with a single, Jayson Werth walked and Rays starter Matt Garza threw a wild pitch to move the runners to second and third. Chase Utley brought Rollins home on a ground out to first.

Tampa tied the game in the top of the second after Carl Crawford doubled off Jamie Moyer and then stole third after Dioner Navarro popped out to second. Gabe Gross plated Crawford with sacrifice fly and the game was even at 1-1.

Tampa Bay Rays Even Series with Philadelphia Phillies

MLB B.J. Upton was 2-4 with an RBI, Jason Bartlett went 2-2 with an RBI and James Shields threw 5 2/3 innings allowing no runs while striking out four as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-2 on Thursday night to even their best-of-seven World Series at 1-1.

After Shields shutdown the Phillies in the top of the first the Rays plated a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame off Philadelphia starter Brett Myers. Akinori Iwamura drew a leadoff walk and Upton followed with a single to left that Jayson Werth kicked to put runners on second and third. Carlos Pena grounded out to second to score Iwamura and move Upton to third and Evan Longoria followed with a groundout to short that brought Upton home.

Philadelphia Phillies Hold Off Tampa Bay Rays to Take Lead

MLB Chase Utley went 2-4 with a two-run homer, Jayson Werth was 2-4 with a run scored and Cole Hamels tossed seven innings of five-hit ball while allowing two runs as the Philadelphia Phillies held off the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 on Wednesday night to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven 2008 World Series.

The Phillies jumped on the board in the first inning as Werth took first on a walk and Utley sent a Scott Kazmir delivery over the right field wall for a 2-0 lead. With the blast Utley became the 34th major league player to homer in his first World Series at bat.

That 2-0 lead was extended to 3-0 in the top of the fourth inning after Carlos Ruiz plated Shane Victorino on a fielder’s choice groundout to shortstop.

2008 World Series Tampa Bay Rays and Philadelphia Phillies

MLB
American League The 2008 World Series picture was cleared Sunday night when the Tampa Bay Rays dumped the Boston Red Sox in Game Seven of the ALCS and now the American League pennant winners will take on the Philadelphia Phillies who wrapped up their NLDS series with the Los Angeles Dodgers last Wednesday.

For the Rays, the 2008 regular season produced their first winning record in franchise history and they parlayed that into an ALDS win over the Chicago White Sox and then their ALCS win over the Red Sox. They now have an opportunity to complete their worst-to-first turnaround into a World Championship, ending more than a decade of futility.

As for the Phillies, the National League champions are looking for their first World Series title since 1980 and are making their first World Series appearance since 1993, a series in which they fell to the Toronto Blue Jays in six games. The Phillies breezed through the NLDS against the Milwaukee Brewers and then had little trouble when they faced the L.A. Dodgers in the NLCS and should be rested for the Rays.

Tampa Bay Rays Heading to World Series

MLB Willy Aybar was 2-3 with a solo homerun, Evan Longoria went 1-3 with a double and an RBI, Rocco Baldelli went 1-3 with an RBI and Matt Garza threw seven innings of two-hit ball allowing just one run while striking out nine as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Boston Red Sox in Game Seven of the ALCS to advance to the World Series where they will now face the National League champion Philadelphia Phillies beginning on Wednesday.

The Red Sox jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Dustin Pedroia hit a homerun over the left field wall off Garza. Boston starter Jon Lester looked strong through the first three innings, setting the Rays down in order but in the fourth he ran into trouble after giving up a leadoff single to Akinori Iwamura. He managed to get B.J. Upton on strikes and then got Carlos Pena to ground into a fielder’s choice that caught Iwamura at second but Longoria followed with a double that brought Pena around from first to tie the game.

Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays Face Off One Last Time

MLB The Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays will meet for one last time in the 2008 season and the winner will earn the right to face the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2008 World Series. After six games in the ALCS the Red Sox and Rays are knotted at three games apiece and Sunday night’s decider will feature Boston’s ace Jon Lester and Tampa’s Game Three winner Matt Garza.

Lester (16-6 3.21 ERA) dropped that Game Three start in Boston after giving up five runs on 8 hits over 5 2/3 innings but the Red Sox are hoping he can resemble the pitcher that went 3-0 against the Rays in the regular season. In 20 innings Lester allowed just two earned runs against the Tampa but all those games were at home. On the road Lester was 5-5 in 2008 but pitched sensationally in the Red Sox ALDS opener against the Angels.

Boston Red Sox Stage Historic Comeback Against Tampa Bay Ray

MLB J.D. Dew singled home Kevin Youkilis in the bottom of the ninth to cap the largest comeback in postseason elimination game history as the Boston Red Sox beat the Tampa Bay Rays 8-7 on Thursday night to take Game Five of the best-of-seven ALCS and send the series back to Florida.

The Red Sox fell behind 2-0 in the first inning when B.J. Upton hit a bomb off Boston starter Daisuke Matsuzaka over the Green Monster. Tampa tacked on three more runs in the top of the third with a pair of longballs as Carlos Pena hit a two-run blast to right and Evan Longoria followed with a solo homer to left and Boston trailed 5-0.

Rays starter Scott Kazmir was nearly unhittable as he kept the Red Sox off the bags surrendering just two hits over six innings but after Tampa put another two runs up in the top of the seventh with an Upton double off Jonathan Papelbon that scored Jason Bartlett and Akinori Iwamura it looked as if the Rays had put the game away and manager Joe Madden lifted him for Grant Balfour in the bottom of the seventh.

Tampa Bay Rays One Game Away from World Series

MLB Willy Aybar was 4-5 with a home run and five RBIs, Carl Crawford was 5-5 with a pair of doubles, a triple and two RBIs and Carlos Pena was 1-3 with a homer and two RBIs as the Tampa Bay Rays pounded the Boston Red Sox 13-4 on Tuesday night to take a 3-1 advantage in their best-of-seven ALCS and now sit one game away from the franchise’s first trip to the World Series.

Tampa wasted little time getting at Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield as they struck for three runs in the top of the first as Pena hit a two-run homer and Evan Longoria followed with his third homer of the series. Wakefield looked like he settled down after breezing through the second but ran into trouble once again in the third after giving up a two-run bomb to Aybar and once Dioner Navarro singled Boston manager Terry Francona lifted Wakefield and brought in Justin Masterson.

Philadelphia Phillies Down Los Angeles Dodgers

MLB Shane Victorino hit a two-run blast in the eighth inning to tie the game and Matt Stairs hit a pinch-hit two-run blast moments later to lift the Philadelphia Phillies a 7-5 come-from-behind victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers and take a 3-1 advantage in their best-of-seven NLCS.

The Phillies jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning as Chase Utley doubled off Dodgers starter Derek Lowe to bring home Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard followed with a ground out that plated Jayson Werth.

L.A. would get one of those runs back in the bottom half of the frame as James Loney doubled off Joe Blanton to score Rafael Furcal but that was all the Dodgers could manage. They struck again in the fifth as Manny Ramirez scored Furcal with a single and Russell Martin grounded out to score Andre Ethier to give L.A. a 3-2 advantage.

Tampa Bay Rays Take 2-1 Series Lead Over Boston Red Sox

MLB B.J. Upton was 2-5 with a three-run home run, Carlos Pena went 2-5 with a solo blast and Rocco Baldelli went 1-3 with a three-run homer as the Tampa Bay Rays jumped all over Boston Red Sox starter Jon Lester and cruised to a 9-1 victory behind the arm of Matt Garza to take a 2-1 lead in the ALCS best-of-seven match-up.

The Rays plated their first run in the top of the second on a fielder’s choice ground out off the bat of Dioner Navarro that scored Evan Longoria. Lester ran into more trouble in the top of the third when he gave up a leadoff single to Jason Barlett and Akinori Iwamura followed with a double to put runners at second and third. B.J. Upton then hit a bomb over the Green Monster in left and Tampa was in front 4-0. After Carlos Pena struck out Longoria hit a solo blast and Boston was in a 5-0 hole.

LA Dodgers Look to Even Series with Philadelphia Phillies

MLB The Los Angeles Dodgers found there’s no place like home as they used a strong pitching performance from Hiroki Kuroda to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-2 on Sunday for their first win in their best-of-seven NLCS and will now try to even the series at 2-2 on Monday when they host the Phillies in Game Four.

Los Angeles will be putting the ball in the hand of Derek Lowe (14-11 3.24 ERA) and hope that he can bounce back from a Game One loss in which he allowed three runs in 5 1/3 innings in a game the dodgers dropped 3-2. Lowe picked up a win against the Phillies in the regular season but wasn’t much better as he allowed three runs over 6 1/3 innings. That win started a streak of seven wins in eight decisions for the Lowe but that ended when the Dodgers lost Game One of the NLCS.
