The list is based on the dates of the 2007/08 thoroughbred racing season (1 August 2007 to 31 July 2008).
The blowout results on last November’s Emirates Stakes Day resulted in the biggest First 4, Quaddie and Trifecta dividends of 2007/08. The Emirates Stakes day Quaddie of $1.391 million eclipsed the biggest NSW TAB dividend of the 2006/07 racing season, which was a $701,993.60 First 4 on the Caulfield Cup.

CHATSWOOD WELCOMES EARLY ARRIVAL

Chatswood is delighted with the arrival of their first foal in 2008, a stunning Niello filly from the lightly raced Fusaichi Pegasus mare – Flying Foxtrot. The striking unmarked brown filly bears all the qualities that her 3-time Group 1 winning sire offers breeders.
Niello’s oldest progeny are now of racing age and he will endeavour to outgun older brother Lonhro’s recently completed first season that included 6 individual winners, 1 Stakes Winner and 3 Stakes Placed horses. Lonhro finished third on the Australian First Season Sire Classification behind Exceed and Excel and Falbrav. Niello is primed to surpass his brother’s achievements in the coming racing season. | |

$214 million in returns for NSW racing, despite EI

Tabcorp Holdings Limited today announced that financial distributions to NSW’s thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing codes totalled $214 million in 2007/08.
The contribution was down only 4.4% on the previous year, despite the significant impact of the equine influenza outbreak on the national racing industry.
“Despite the biggest modern day crisis in NSW racing’s history, TAB returns were almost in line with 2006/07. It shows the resilience of the NSW racing industry and the strength of its partnership with Tabcorp. It is a great credit to all participants,” said Tabcorp Chief Executive Officer, Elmer Funke Kupper. | |

Changes to New Zealand protest rules and track ratings

Tabcorp customers are advised of recent changes to New Zealand thoroughbred racing protest rules and its track rating system.
A key factor behind the changes introduced by the New Zealand Racing Board has been to provide greater consistency for punters betting on New Zealand racing on both sides of the Tasman.
NSW and Victorian TAB punters bet $257 million on New Zealand thoroughbred racing in 2007/08. Tabcorp covered 4375 thoroughbred, harness and greyhound races from New Zealand in 2007/08.

STRONG AUSTRALIAN & NZ FLAVOUR TO 2008 SINGAPORE DERBY

Sportingbet Australia is betting on the $1,000,000 GROUP 1 EMIRATES SINGAPORE DERBY. The feature race on Sunday July 13 is the held over 2000m on the turf track at Kranji Racecourse, Singapore.
This year there is a distinctly Australian and NZ flavour about the Derby with the even money ($2) favourite TOP SPIN, bred by WOODLANDS STUD in NSW, and ridden by Australian hoop Noel Callow. Callow is no stranger to Derby success having won the VRC Derby aboard BENICIO in 2005 for Lee Freedman.
Sportingbet Australia punters are excited about the Laurie Laxon trained TOP SPIN, (by ARENA out of the STRATEGIC mare GAS). It has contested 6 successive Group races leading into the Derby on Sunday, having won 4 of the 6 and being unplaced in just one of those runs. He won his last start, the DERBY TRIAL, almost 3 weeks ago by 2-1/4L beating stablemate ACE AND ACES ($7.50) with FANTASTIC OWNERS ($13) filling the minor placing.

Tabcorp welcomes race fields announcement

Tabcorp has welcomed the approval of the Racing Administration Amendment (Publication of Race Fields) Regulation 2008, which will ensure that appropriate product fees are paid to the NSW racing industry.
The regulation will allow for the NSW racing industry to be paid for its product by wagering operators who bet on NSW thoroughbred, greyhound or harness racing.
Tabcorp believes the application of a non-discriminatory and uniform fee, set by racing’s governing bodies, will commence addressing distortions in the wagering market caused by corporate bookmakers and betting exchanges who utilise NSW racing data without paying for the raw product.

One Sportingbet Australia punter has staked a massive $50,000 each way at $5.00 on Weekend Hussler in this year’s Cox Plate.
Sportingbet Australia CEO Michael Sullivan said he was happy to take on the punter four months out from the race.
“There’s no doubt that Weekend Hussler has the makings of one of the greats of the turf,” said Sullivan.
“But this race is not marked definite on his agenda and plenty can happen in four months.
“We love to take on the champions and were more than happy to accommodate our punter.”

Triple Crown Drought Continues

It will be at least one more year before horseracing fans will have an opportunity to celebrate a Triple Crown winner as Saturday’s 4-1 favorite at the Belmont Stakes, Big Brown, was pulled up after the far turn and the long shot Da’Tara won the blanket of carnations.
Big Brown was bidding to become the first horse since 1978 when Affirmed took the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes to win the Triple Crown.
Big Brown had been holding third for the majority of the race yet it became apparent towards the final turn that he would not be making a final push for history. | |
