Calzaghe relinquishes WBO crown

Boxing Joe Calzaghe has decided to give up his WBO super-middleweight belt to allow him to concentrate on his light-heavyweight bout with Roy Jones Jr.

The decision brings an end to the 36-year-old Welshman's reign after nearly 11 years.

"It was a tough decision to make, relinquishing the belt, I can tell you that without hesitation," Calzaghe said in his South Wales Argus column.

"It's just too hard to get down to the 12 stone super-middleweight limit."

Calzaghe won the vacant WBO belt against Chris Eubank on 11 October 1997 in a thrilling 12-round decision, a fight the Welshman maintains is still his hardest contest.

Sugar Ray Leonard on Sergio Mora

Boxing Legendary fighter Sugar Ray Leonard recently shared his thoughts about Sergio Mora and the challenger’s upcoming bout against Vernon Forrest Saturday.

Mora will face his biggest test when he takes on Forrest (40-2, 29 KOs) for his WBC super welterweight title Saturday, June 7.

Mora (20-0-1, five KOs), of Los Angeles, won “The Contender” television series on Oct. 15, 2005, with an entertaining and hard-fought split decision over Peter Manfredo, Jr. The fight with Forrest is exactly what Mora has been aiming for and should prove to be his toughest challenge to date.

As part of a world championship doubleheader, the evening will kick off when Carlos Quintana (25-1, 19 KOs) looks to defend his newly acquired WBO welterweight belt against the boxer he dethroned, the previously unbeaten Paul Williams (33-1, 24 KOs). The Quintana-Williams bout is a rematch of a WBO welterweight title fight that Quintana won in a shocking upset on Feb. 9, 2008.

Hatton vs Lazcano

Boxing
It seems that all the pre-match focus is about who Ricky Hatton will face next, but he still has a job to do on Saturday night when he returns to Manchester to face Juan Lazcano in front of 55,000 adoring fans.

Rumours of a mega UK bout with former WBC Champ Junior Witter and a re-match with Floyd Mayweather have dominated the build-up: one thing it seems everyone is agreed on is that Hatton will win the fight.

He is a best priced 1/9 to defeat the 33 year-old Mexican and set up a contest with IBF Champion Paulie Malignaggi in America.
