Calzaghe relinquishes WBO crown

Joe Calzaghe has decided to give up his WBO super-middleweight belt to allow him to concentrate on his light-heavyweight bout with Roy Jones Jr.
The decision brings an end to the 36-year-old Welshman's reign after nearly 11 years.
"It was a tough decision to make, relinquishing the belt, I can tell you that without hesitation," Calzaghe said in his South Wales Argus column.
"It's just too hard to get down to the 12 stone super-middleweight limit."
Calzaghe won the vacant WBO belt against Chris Eubank on 11 October 1997 in a thrilling 12-round decision, a fight the Welshman maintains is still his hardest contest.

Rakhim Chakhkiev Wins Gold Medal in Men’s Boxing Heavy Weight Division
Russia’s Rakhim Chakhkiev exacted some revenge for a 2007 loss to Clemente Russo at the World Championships by beating the Italian in the gold medal match of the heavy weight division in men’s boxing at 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Both fighters remained cautious in the early stages of the fight with Chakhkiev taking a 1-0 lead in the first only to have Russo even tings up in the second with a 2-1 round. No points were scored in the third, setting the stage for a fourth round for the gold.
While the action was steady it was Chakhkiev that managed to score a pair of points to take the fight 4-2.

Klitschko unconvincing in victory

Wladimir Klitschko defended his WBO and IBF titles with a comfortable win over American Tony Thompson on Saturday.
Thompson, 36, had a promising opening round but the 6ft 6in Klitschko quickly seized control, despite suffering a cut to his eye in the early rounds.
The champion's power wore down Thompson as the fight progressed, with Klitschko easily outboxing his tiring rival.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. Retires from Boxing

Floyd Mayweather Jr., whom many considered to be the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world, announced his retirement from boxing Friday.
Mayweather, the undefeated welterweight champion, announced Friday that he was cancelling his highly-touted rematch with Oscar de la Hoya on Sept. 20.
"It is with a heavy heart that I write you this message today," Mayweather, 32, said in a statement. "I have decided to permanently retire from boxing. This decision was not an easy one for me to make as boxing is all I have done since I was a child. However, these past few years have been extremely difficult for me to find the desire and joy to continue in the sport." | |

Sugar Ray Leonard on Sergio Mora

Legendary fighter Sugar Ray Leonard recently shared his thoughts about Sergio Mora and the challenger’s upcoming bout against Vernon Forrest Saturday.
Mora will face his biggest test when he takes on Forrest (40-2, 29 KOs) for his WBC super welterweight title Saturday, June 7.
Mora (20-0-1, five KOs), of Los Angeles, won “The Contender” television series on Oct. 15, 2005, with an entertaining and hard-fought split decision over Peter Manfredo, Jr. The fight with Forrest is exactly what Mora has been aiming for and should prove to be his toughest challenge to date.
As part of a world championship doubleheader, the evening will kick off when Carlos Quintana (25-1, 19 KOs) looks to defend his newly acquired WBO welterweight belt against the boxer he dethroned, the previously unbeaten Paul Williams (33-1, 24 KOs). The Quintana-Williams bout is a rematch of a WBO welterweight title fight that Quintana won in a shocking upset on Feb. 9, 2008.

Hatton vs Lazcano

It seems that all the pre-match focus is about who Ricky Hatton will face next, but he still has a job to do on Saturday night when he returns to Manchester to face Juan Lazcano in front of 55,000 adoring fans.
Rumours of a mega UK bout with former WBC Champ Junior Witter and a re-match with Floyd Mayweather have dominated the build-up: one thing it seems everyone is agreed on is that Hatton will win the fight.
He is a best priced 1/9 to defeat the 33 year-old Mexican and set up a contest with IBF Champion Paulie Malignaggi in America. | |
