Andy Roddick advanced by defeating Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2).


Tommy Haas advanced by beating Dmitry Tursunov 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

Richard Gasquet defeated Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, winning three straight matches at the tour level for the first time.

Fernando Gonzalez and James Blake both lost. Gonzalez lost to Janko Tipsarevic 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 8-6, and Blake was beaten by former top-ranked player Juan Carlos Ferrero 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).

Martina Hingis the 1997 Wimbledon champion lost to Laura Granville of the United States 6-4, 6-2.

Justine Henin, trying to complete a career Grand Slam with a title at the All England Club, beat Elena Vesnina of Russia 6-1, 6-3.

Serena Williams defeated Milagros Sequera of Venezuela 6-1, 6-0 in 43 minutes.

Jelena Jankovic, a French Open semifinalist, rallied to beat Lucie Safarova 5-7, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.
 
Michaella Krajicek upset Anna Chakvetadze 7-6 (10-8), 6-7 (5-7), 6-2.

Patty Schnyder beat Alona Bondarenko 6-4, 3-6, 8-6 and will next face Henin.

Daniela Hantuchova, Williams' next opponent, defeated Katarina Srebotnik 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Marion Bartoli beat Shahar Peer 6-3, 6-2.
