Brett Favre officially filed for reinstatement with the NFL on Tuesday, making his return from retirement official.

Favre sent the letter to the league office late Tuesday afternoon and also spoke by phone with commissioner Roger Goodell, who said that he will wait 24 hours before he acts on Favre's request.

Favre and the Green Bay Packers have been going back and forth for weeks since Favre first mentioned a possible return to football. The Packers own Favre's rights until his contract expires after the 2010 season.

Aaron Rodgers is confirmed to be the team's starter at quarterback throughout the preseason, according to Packers coach Mike McCarthy.

Favre retired in March after 16 seasons in the league as the all-time leader in touchdown passes (442), completions (5,377) and yards (61,655).
