Date: Monday, July 21 @ 14:28:34 CDT Topic: Golf
Greg Norman carried a two-stroke lead into the final day of play at the British Open at Birkdale but it wasn’t enough as the Australian struggled, finishing 7-over, while Irishman Padraig Harrington fired a 1-under to claim his second straight Open victory on Sunday.
Harrington trailed by two strokes heading into Sunday play but put together an incredible 69 on a course that saw only six golfers finish under par on the day. Harrington finished the four-day stretch 3-over, four strokes better than Ian Poulter who fired a 69 as well to finish in second at 7-over.
Harrington captured his second claret jug in successive years, last year he beat Sergio Garcia in a playoff.
Norman had been the story at Birkdale as he was attempting to become the oldest golfer to ever capture a major but he was never able to recoup from the bogies he hit on his first three holes.
