Roger Federer is one step away from playing for his sixth straight Wimbledon singles title while his opponent, Marat Safin, is looking for his first Grand Slam victory since 2005. One of them will get the chance to move on as they meet in the Wimbledon men’s semifinals on Friday beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Federer has yet to drop a set at Wimbledon as he not only seeks his sixth straight title but his 13th career Grand Slam singles title. Federer actually beat Safin in the 2004 Australian Open finals for his second career Grand Slam singles title. The semifinals appearance marks the 17th straight Grand Slam event in which Federer has achieved that milestone, a record.

Safin, a former world number one, last collected a Grand Slam singles title in 2005 when he won the Australian Open. He also has a U.S. Open title to his credit, winning that Grand Slam event in 2000. Prior to this year Safin had never made it past the quarterfinals at Wimbledon and hadn’t made it past the fourth round of any Grand Slam event since 2005

The winner of the Roger Federer v. Marat Safin match will face the winner of the Rafael Nadal v. Rainer Schuettler match that is also scheduled for Friday. Federer has beaten Nadal in the finals the past three years.
