Marat Safin moved one step closer to capturing is first Grand Slam singles title since 2005 and his first ever Wimbledon championship on Wednesday after knocking of Feliciano Lopez 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 in a rain delayed match.

Safin appeared to benefit from the rain as he came out after being down a set and quickly gained control of the match. The 28-year-old hammered out 18 aces with just three double-faults and after an error filled first set he finished with 23 unforced errors. As for Lopez, things went downhill quickly as he finished with 33 unforced errors and could only take advantage of three of eight break point opportunities.

Safin, the former world’s number one, hasn’t won a Grand Slam singles title since the Australian Open in 2005. Safin also won the U.S. Open title in 2000.
